DISCOVERY 2

The last Discovery  showcase of 2018 brings  a slice of alternative rock n roll with The Velveteen Orkestra, anthemic pop, rock band Pedrick, rising folk and country act Morganway,  recent  ‘Fender Unsigned’ finalist, Roisin O’Hagan and Dj Delphi.

THE VELVETEEN ORKESTRA
Returning to the Discovery stage are a ragged-trousered rock and roll orchestra conceived in a leaky, shadow-veiled district of South London. Bellowing out from underneath the grey brutalist tower blocks named in honour of romantic poets is a sound that is both savage, yet elegant… animal, yet noble… honest, yet fantastical.
The band’s debut album (Shadow & Whimsy) was three-years in the making and came after a studio fire had ravaged their entire work to date, leaving them with nothing.
Their pulsating live shows are attracting audiences for their rich romanticism and brooding intensity, as well as their sparkling sense of humour. Lead Singer/Guitarist Dan Shears emits a gilt-edged voice from a spindle-limbed frame, evoking memories of Jeff Buckley at his heart-aching best. The vocal intertwining created by he, Megan Affonso (‘Cello & Voice) and Lindsey Oliver (Double-Bass & Voice) is the glimmering crest of a surging tidal wave of carnivalesque opulence coupled with post-punk venom and snarl. Sarah Boughton’s (Violin) often piercing top lines summon up the blood from a gypsy’s curse and Alan Dunn’s touch on the piano has all the passion and drama of a tragic Shakespearean romance. Nick Van Vlaenderen’s percussive anchorage forms the skeleton upon which the others dress the flesh. The sum of these parts is an intoxicating brand of melancholic alternative rock with nodding acquaintances towards rockabilly and folk noir.

MORGANWAY
Morganway was founded by twin brothers Callum (vocals/guitar) and Kieran Morgan (lead guitar). Its fiery sound and distinctive Americana glow wears its heart on its sleeve, packing charismatic five-part harmonies and powerful riffs into the emotional songwriting. Joining them is SJ Mortimer (vocals), Nicole Terry (fiddle), Matthew Brocklehurst (keys), Rory Hill (bass) and Ed Bullinger (drums).
In 2017, Morganway caught the ear of Britain’s country music champion, Whispering Bob Harris. Following a live session at his Under The Apple Tree home studio, they were invited to headline the UTAT stage at Silverstone. The band also supported The Shires at Taverham Hall to a crowd of 4000 and were later nominated for a BCMA award. Throughout 2018 the band has been touring extensively building momentum, with a summer packed full of festivals such as Buckle & Boots and Cambridge Folk Festival. They have also been busy recording their debut album, mixed in Nashville, which is set to be released in early 2019.

“Flawless 5 part harmonies accompanied by the warm glow of honest Americana riffs and melodies” – The Troubadour London

“One of Britain’s most exciting unsigned bands…they are going places.” Jonathan brick (A Country Way Of Life)

PEDRICK
Pop/rock duo hailing from Exeter, composing of founding members and  twins Theo and Bertie Pedrick, along with Dan Brewis on drums and Eddie Cockcroft on Bass. With a sound that lies between the radio-friendly sensibilities of Coldplay mixed with the arena rock of Imagine Dragons, they provide anthemic pop/rock songs alongside more sensitive ballads.
Known for energetic live performances, Pedrick  have previously opened for Toploader, and have headlined a number of independent venues, including London’s  Half-Moon, Putney, and The Bedford, Balham.  A new single ‘All I Can Think About’ from their forthcoming debut EP is released on 9th November.

ROISIN O’HAGAN
Country/pop singer-songwriter and Fender Undiscovered Artist of the Year 2018 finalist, produces lyrical hooks seemingly in her sleep, writes catchy, heart-felt songs delivered with a voice that aches and captivates.  June 2018 saw the release of Roisin’s sparkly single ‘Drive’, which grabbed the attention of BBC Music Introducing in Essex and has received airplay on BBC Radio in Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. The single also received the backing of Matt Malley (Counting Crows), who then welcomed Roisin on a visit to his LA recording studio in August. In July 2018, Roisin placed in the final three of the Fender Undiscovered Artist of the Year 2018 contest and was tipped by industry judges Max Helyer (You Me At Six) and Georgie Rogers (BBC 6 Music, Beats 1) for her vocals and songwriting ability.

“If I had my own record label, I would sign Roisin immediately. She’s the half Irish daughter I never had. Her songwriting is top notch, vocal phrasing is brilliant and arrangements are ready for the world to discover. Join this party soon…it’s going to be a great one!” – Matt Malley – Counting Crows bass player and Oscar nominated songwriter
