The Ocean – facebook.com/theoceancollective

Over the last two decades, the band have been in a perpetual state of evolution, releasing a steady succession of ground breaking and acclaimed albums that have all sought to push heavy music forward, embracing the cerebral, the primal and the inexplicable in equal measure.

In the middle of the global pandemic, The Ocean are about to conclude their most ambitious, overarching and engrossing endeavour to date ‘Phanerozoic II’. The new album is more experimental, more eclectic in musical style and direction and more varied in terms of tempos, beats, guitar work and the use of electronics. Divided into two sections – Mesozoic and Cenozoic – Phanerozoic II once again showcases the detail and depth that have become two of The Ocean’s most enduring trademarks.

Pg.lost – facebook.com/pglost/

Hailing from the city of Norrköping in east Sweden, pg.lost are a post-rock collective who have described their sounds as “Swedish experimental instrumentalism”. In contrast to the largely swamping, unwavering soundscapes of contemporaries such as This Will Destroy You and Explosions In The Sky, the band’s sound is anchored by confrontational riffs and bombastic percussion, transcending the vast melancholy ambience mastered by other outfits within the genre.

Svalbard – facebook.com/svalbarduk

Drawing musical influence from crust, post-rock and hardcore; and lyrical influence from early 20th century existentialism, Svalbard alternate between moments of aggression and moments of frailty with an all-encompassing sense of desperate hope. Cathartic and affecting, they are without a doubt one of UK’s finest new bands.

Hypno5e – facebook.com/hypno5e

Hypno5e was formed by Emmanuel Jessua and Thibault Lamy. Emmanuel had been working on Hypno5e songs for a long time, during his stay in Mexico in early 2000. Inspiration came from a need to translate his youthful years in Bolivia into music and using that like a journal, the musical transposition of a deep melancholia he felt. A melancholia that grew with each city crossed out and left behind. Hypno5e are reckoned pioneers of French cinematographic metal, fusing a unique blend of ambient spheres and progressive metal with South American influences.
